Countdown Timers in Mailchimp
Mailchimp is one of the most popular email marketing platforms in the world. While it does not include a native countdown generator, you can easily insert one using a custom HTML code block. This guide shows you how in three simple steps.
Countdown timers add visual urgency to your emails, encouraging subscribers to act before the offer expires. Studies show that emails with countdown timers can increase click-through rates by up to 30%.
Step 1: Generate Your Countdown
Visit the ContadorParaEmail generator, configure the deadline, colors, font, and language, then click "Copy code".
Choose from five different styles (blocks, flat, minimal, rounded, gradient) and over 30 fonts to match your brand perfectly.
Step 2: Insert in Mailchimp
- Open your campaign editor in Mailchimp
- Drag a "Code" block (found in the advanced blocks section) into your layout
- Paste the HTML code from the generator
- Close the code editor and you will see the countdown in the preview
Why Use a Code Block Instead of an Image Block?
The Image block in Mailchimp uploads the image to its own servers, which would convert the dynamic GIF into a static image. By using a Code block, the GIF URL points to our server, which generates an updated countdown every time the email is opened.
Important: The Ampersands
The HTML code from ContadorParaEmail uses & instead of & in the URL. This is intentional — Mailchimp's HTML parser requires this encoding to properly handle the URL parameters without breaking them.
Compatibility
The countdown works with all Mailchimp plans (Free, Essentials, Standard, Premium) and is compatible with both the classic editor and the new editor. It also works in automated customer journeys.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it work with Mailchimp automations?
Yes. The GIF is generated on every email open, so it always shows the correct remaining time — even in automated journeys triggered days apart.
Can I customize the colors to match my brand?
Absolutely. The generator lets you set background color, digit color, accent color, and label color. You can also enable transparent backgrounds.
Tips for Mailchimp
- Use the "Medium (540px)" size from the generator — it fits well with standard Mailchimp template widths
- If your template has a white background, try the "Light Violet" preset or enable "Transparent background"
- Always send a test email before sending to your full list to verify the countdown renders correctly
- Combine the countdown with a bold headline and a clear call-to-action button for maximum impact
